Tim is from a farming family in east Central Saskatchewan and his family moved to Calgary in 1981. It was a tough time and taught Tim many lessons. Growing up meant travelling back and forth for seeding, harvest and summer on the farm as a boy. He fell in love with the prairies, spending time fishing and hunting and enjoying the out doors. While always wanting to be on the farm, he settled on university in Calgary.
He began his career at TD Securities (Toronto) in their elite trading development program and took the opportunity to be a commodity trader early in his career, tying back to his western roots. Ultimately, Tim held the Senior PM position for the Energy Derivatives portfolio. Tim and his wife left Toronto and moved back west, joining Shell Trading. He rose to VP of Trading (North America) and moved to Houston before returning after the birth of their daughter.
Tim Pickering is now Founder, President and CIO of Auspice, a quantitative investment management firm. Tim leads strategic decision making and the vision for Auspice’s diverse suite of award-winning investment strategies. The Auspice investments are recognized as performing exceptionally well during times of volatility and crisis, providing better returns and lowering risk long-term. Tim believes that in the future, non-correlated alternative investments will be a core holding in all portfolios, regardless of investor size or sophistication, and not just for the institutional clients and families he calls partners.
Through the founding of Auspice, Tim ties together a career in commodity and financial risk and portfolio management that has spanned institutional experience along with entrepreneurial vision. Outside of Auspice, Tim has been involved in grain farming in Western Canada.
In May 2015, Auspice launched the Canadian Crude Oil Index ETF under the ticker (CCX) on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). This is the only way for retail investors globally to access the Canadian Heavy Crude Oil commodity market directly. Tim is an advocate for the Canadian energy market and on improving the messaging, transparency and liquidity of this marketplace.
In 2015, Tim was selected by Alberta Venture Magazine as one of Alberta’s 50 most influential people. In 2017, Tim was named to the University of Calgary Accounting and Finance Advisory Council and in 2019 became the Chair of the Finance Advisory Council at the Haskayne School of Business.
Tim’s motivation each day primarily involves two points: 1) doing something innovative and entrepreneurial and 2) meeting interesting people. If you have an idea, an entrepreneurial vision, or a disruptive thought, Tim is interested in talking to you.
In addition to a career focused on trading and financial entrepreneurship, Tim has a fun side. Personal time is spent with family and friends, often at the family cabin he and his wife Tammy built in their twenties. In the summer, he enjoys waterskiing and working on and cruising in hot rod cars and other things with motors. Tim is a big music fan, loves seeing live music and still plays drums occasionally. In the winter, if you are a skier, Tim suggests this is a much better “business day” sport than golf, and is happy to discuss life and strategy on the lift or in the lodge.
Tim is a family man who married his university sweetheart Tammy over 23 years ago and they have two children, Haley is 17 and was born in Houston, has been involved in competitive show-jumping and West is 15, named after Tim’s favorite word, loves playing football.
Tim loves any excuse to get out to the range, with the kids when they can, near the family cabin at Canal Flats, BC, or to Silver Willow Sporting Club or Spruce Creek Upland Club for some clays or upland birds.
